Staffers and worshippers at Bee Creek United Methodist Church, 3000 Bee Creek Road, Spicewood, celebrated the Feb. 28 groundbreaking of a gymnasium that will also serve as a gathering place and classrooms for its members and Spicewood residents, Senior Pastor Laura Heikes said.

“We believe that our youth are among the most effective leaders in our church,” she said. “We’re very excited about building a new facility that will provide a place for them, as well as the community, to have fun and worship.”

Donations covered the cost of the facility, and no loans will be needed for its construction. The building will include a regulation-size basketball court, two volleyball courts with a viewing area, gathering places and a classroom, Heikes said.

The church, which was formed in June 2002, will share the space with community youth sports leagues for practices and tournaments.
