Cedar Park voters approved May 7 of a ballot measure that gives the city the authority to sell a 14-acre tract of undeveloped parkland.

The approval of the election makes the city legally authorized to sell, lease or use the property for non-park purposes, said Tony Moline, president and CEO of the Cedar Park Chamber of Commerce, which authorized a resolution in support of the special election.

“[The tract] backs up to a lot of retail and a lot of commercial [land], and it doesn’t really make sense for that land to be a park anymore,” Moline said. “There are many other plans for many other parks with the city right now.”

Voting results

Of the 2,443 votes counted, 52.68 percent, or 1,287 voters, supported authorizing the property sale, and 47.32 percent, or 1,156 voters, voted against the proposition, according to unofficial final voting results released by Williamson County on May 7.

The Cedar Park Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors said in its resolution that the site near the corner of Discovery and Whitestone boulevards is in the middle of a retail and general office area in the city and could be better suited to other uses.

“[The proposition] gives the city the most leeway to do different things with that piece of land,” Moline said.

All results are unofficial until canvassed.

Cedar Park voters will decide May 7 on a ballot measure that if passed will authorize the city to sell a 14-acre tract of undeveloped parkland.

The proposition would authorize the sale of the property; there is currently no offer of proposed sale pending. If approved, the city would be legally authorized to sell, convey, transfer, swap, lease or use the property for non-park purposes, if desired, in the future.

Early voting
Unofficial early voting results released by Williamson County indicated more voters supported the proposition.

Of the 1,598 early votes counted, 56.38 percent, or 901 voters, voted in favor of authorizing the property sale, and 43.62 percent, or 697 voters, voted against the proposition.

The Cedar Park Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors authorized a resolution in support of the election, which points out the site near the corner of Discovery and Whitestone boulevards is in the middle of a retail and general office area in the city and could be better-suited to other uses.

All results are unofficial until canvassed.
