With heavy rains coming into the Austin area June 16, responding to floods that occurred in May was still on the agenda at the Travis County Commissioners Court's weekly meeting.
Commissioners discussed plans for flood cleanup and recovery following heavy rain May 23 and 25 that affected many Austin-area residents. The county is working with local, state and federal officials including the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide relief.
At the June 16 meeting, commissioners considered potential county sponsorship of a Severe Repetitive Loss Grant application to elevate certain homes in the floodplain of Walnut Creek, which is located in Precinct One. Also on the agenda was a request from Hays County Judge Bert Cobb for assistance with flood recovery efforts.
Buyouts and elevating homes are among many ways of mitigating property for flooding, FEMA representative Marty Chester said. Commissioner Ron Davis said when it comes to maintaining public safety, he wants to see what is available to the county.
“[There are] a lot of different cases out there. No shoe fits all,” he said.
Two homeowners in the Walnut Creek area attended the meeting to provide feedback related to the potential grant application; one said she did not know whether she would consider a buyout if it were offered for homes in the area, and the other said he would not accept a buyout.
Davis suggested going into executive session and voting on the issue later in the day.
“My heart goes out to each and every one of you, and let’s brace ourselves for a possible [additional flood]. Y’all be careful out there and be cautious,” he said.
