In January, Georgetown ISD and the Georgetown Fire Department launched the Firemen Lunch Buddy Mentor program at all of the districts elementary school campuses.

The program brings 88 firefighters on a rotating basis to each campus where they visit with students during lunch periods in the cafeteria, playground or library.

Driver Jonathan Gilliam helped start the program with Battalion Chief Ray Cummings.

Gilliam said he wanted to be able to get involved with teaching students about different subjects ranging from fire safety and bullying to the importance of reading and making good choices.

Each firefighter went through the districts mentor training program and a background check, said Laura Antoine, GISD Mentor Program and Development director.
