Motorists traveling through the US 183 and I-35 intersection at night should prepare for lane closures as the Texas Department of Transportation progresses with its construction of flyovers connecting the two highways.

According to a TxDOT press release, “Crews will alternate fully closing the I-35 and US 183 main lanes at the I-35 and US 183 interchange.”

The nightly lane closures will take place from Aug. 8-12, lasting from 9 p.m.-5 a.m.

During the closures, signs will direct traffic to proceed using the frontage roads with lanes reopening by 5 a.m. each day.

Detours on northbound I-35 will take the US 183 exit to access the frontage road and re-enter I-35 at the Rundberg Lane entrance ramp, while detours on southbound I-35 will use the Rundberg exit to access the frontage road and re-enter I-35 north of US 290 East.

On US 183 northbound, drivers will use the I-35/Lamar Boulevard exit to access the frontage road and re-enter US 183 at the entrance ramp after Georgian Drive. Southbound US 183 travelers will use the I-35 North/Waco exit and re-enter US 183 at the Cameron Road entrance ramp.

When construction finishes, the flyover will connect northbound I-35 to northbound US 183. Weather permitting, it is expected to be completed by September, according to TxDOT public information officer Diann Hodges.

The work is a part of TxDOT’s $124.2 million I-35 project that will make improvements to the highway from Rundberg to US 290 East, according to TxDOT materials. That project also includes rebuilding the St. John’s Avenue bridge and improving bicycle and pedestrian sidewalks and paths.
