1. A $6.5 million roadway reconstruction and utility adjustment project is set to begin in October. Justin Lane will be reconstructed from Burnet Road to Reese Lane, and water line improvements will be made from Burnet to North Lamar Boulevard. In addition to road reconstruction and utility line improvements, the project will entail installing a two-way protected bicycle lane on Justin between Burnet and North Lamar to meet the connectivity aims of the Austin Bicycle Master Plan. Sidewalk will be removed and reconstructed to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and fill gaps. Estimated timeline: October 2016-December 2017
2. Construction continues on Rio Grande Street from 26th Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Roadwork occurring on the east side of Rio Grande from 24th to 26th streets shifted to the west side in June. The current phase of the project is expected to be complete by early August barring inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances. The project will cost approximately $9 million in voter-approved bond money. Estimated timeline: February 2016-January 2018
3. The intersection of Riverside Drive and Lakeshore Boulevard is slated for $814,000 in improvements that will transform it into a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly public space. Multimodal transportation issues, such as adding sidewalks, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant accessibility and bicycle lanes will be addressed, and work will also entail the installation of rain garden to improve water quality.
Estimated timeline: summer 2016-spring 2017
E. Seventh Street, Pleasant Valley Road intersection improvements
E. Seventh Street, Pleasant Valley Road intersection improvements[/caption]The city of Austin Public Works Department began repairs to the intersection of East Seventh Street and Pleasant Valley Road in May. Existing pavers will be removed and replaced with stamped, colored concrete with a herringbone pattern. Beginning May 28, traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction on East Seventh from Calles Street to the bridge over the Capital Metro railroad tracks and on Pleasant Valley Road from Garwood Street to the Cepeda Branch Library. Traffic delays are expected during peak travel times. The Capital Metro bus stop at the southwest corner of East Seventh and Pleasant Valley will be closed during construction. Visit www.capmetro.org for alternative stops. In 2011 crews resurfaced travel lanes and made drainage fixes and streetscape improvements. After completing construction the project team observed that the pavers at the intersection of East Seventh and North Pleasant Valley were deficient. A stakeholder process resulted in choosing a layout with stamped, colored concrete.
