When in-person classes begin again at the University of Texas campus this fall, all students, faculty, staff and visitors will be required to wear face masks anytime they are at a campus building.

UT Interim President Jay Hartzell, who took over the position when former President Gregory Fenves assumed the presidency May 30 at Emory University in Atlanta, outlined the policy in a June 8 letter to the UT community,.

Classes for the fall semester begin Aug. 26. UT has the face covering policy in place for the summer session, according to Hartzell, but all classes for the summer have been moved online.

According to Hartzell’s letter, face masks do not have to be worn in a student’s residence hall room or if an individual is alone in a private office or space. The masks are encouraged outdoors but are not required.

Students will be returning to campus from the beginning of the fall term until the Thanksgiving break, after which they will return home and finish classes online.

In a June 3 letter, Hartzell announced that classrooms will only be filled at 40% capacity during the fall, which means there will be some schedule changes made to spread out class times.
