The city of Austin will increase police officer salaries by 4% and offer up to $15,000 in incentives for new cadets amid ongoing contract negotiations, the city announced March 2.
The details are part of a plan developed based on an ordinance passed by City Council on Feb. 23 to provide police benefits and ensure police oversight as the city and the Austin Police Association move toward the March 31 expiration date on the current contract without a new agreement.
Beyond the pay increase—which will be effective April 1 for officers ranked lower than assistant chiefs—and the pay incentives for cadets, the plan also includes retention incentives for current officers and the continuation of current pay programs, including longevity pay, shift differential, overtime and leave accrual.
