In 2002, local owners Tim Smith and Sonya Wilson quit their jobs to open up a dog day care. At the time, Smith said there were not a lot of similar businesses in Austin.
Since then, the couple have expanded their offerings to include boarding, training and more.
Smith said what makes Southpaws different is that it is free range, meaning dogs are not kept in kennels. This allows dogs to play and tire themselves out before going home, Smith said.
Smith also said someone is on-site with boarded dogs 24/7.
Southpaws Playschool is located at 2235 S. Lamar Blvd., Austin.
