West Campus bakery Texas French Bread caught fire and burned on the night of Jan. 24, according to the Austin Fire Department.
Owner Murph Wilcott’s bakery has been open since 1981, according to the bakery’s website. It was once the Rome Inn, a music venue that hosted Austin icons, including Stevie Ray Vaughan.
The bakery did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
“I hope they come back strong,” said Austin resident Randy Gregory II, who has been buying bread from the bakery at farmers markets regularly for five or so years. “It’s unfortunate that such an icon in Austin was taken away. ... It hurts the community, their employees and the local restaurant scene that relies on them.”
