Travis County commissioners unanimously approved a permit March 22 for an opening tour at the Tesla Gigafactory in East Austin after a presentation that provided details about the invite-only event that could bring up to 15,000 people to the facility.

Travis County Fire Marshal Tony Callaway said the event would take place April 7 from 4-11 p.m. at the Gigafactory site, located at 12733 Tesla Road. The event would be an indoor-outdoor event featuring a tour through parts of the facility and two music stages.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously confirmed on Twitter that the event will be a barbecue.

Callaway said organizers are planning for a maximum of 15,000 people, though the total number might be slightly lower. He said they are also looking into a shuttle system to reduce traffic.

Callaway said the factory, which will total 8 million square feet, is not complete. The tour will only cover areas his office deem safe. He said the planned event will only utilize about 5% of the space, and manufacturing will be stopped during the event to prevent any related accidents.

Tesla representatives confirmed during the meeting that the event would be invite-only and that invites have not yet been sent out.

Commissioners asked Callaway about concerns from a resident who told the court they heard fireworks from the facility.

Callaway said a fireworks show is under consideration, but that even if Tesla is granted permission for the show, it would be conditional based on the weather. He also said the county is working with Tesla to establish safety plans in the event of bad weather.
