Leander Mayor Troy Hill will not extend the city's disaster declaration that expires July 8.

The most recent disaster declaration was issued June 29 with Hill's social distancing order but went into effect July 1. Without council consent, the declaration expires July 8.

"Since Governor Abbott's order supersedes our local order on social distancing and masks, Mayor Hill did not see a need to extend his declaration," Public Information Officer Mike Neu said in a July 6 release. "But citizens should know they can still voice their concerns or opinions on any local issue to all city council members by email or phone."

Hill canceled the special-called July 7 council meeting that was intended to extend the declaration. Hill called the special meeting last week after the city received a high volume of public comments for the disaster declaration agenda item.

City Council will meet next on July 16. Public commenters will be notified of the change, and their comments will be forwarded to council members' emails, according to the release.
