Leander ISD board members voted 4-1 to appoint Sade Fashokun to fill the vacant Place 5 seat on the LISD board of trustees.

Fashokun will serve until November 2022, when the next Leander ISD board member election takes place.

"I appreciate that we talk to some different folks," Board Member Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia said. "I felt that her participation on districtwide committees and serving in leadership—PTA roles—would make her a great candidate."

Board Member Aaron Johnson voted against the appointment. Board Member Elexis Grimes abstained from voting.

At the previous board meeting, trustees elected to fill the vacancy through appointment rather than call a special election in May, which was estimated to cost between $100,000 to $200,000.

Former Board Member Jim MacKay resigned from his seat in September, citing inappropriate content within school literature.

MacKay spoke during the public comments portion of the Oct. 7 meeting and said though appointing someone is the most fiscally conservative choice, the problem is that the community does not trust the board.

“Therefore, they want the board to spend a lot of money so they can have a hand in it,” MacKay said. “What that tells me is that the community feels that they are not being taken along for the ride.”
