A new franchise agreement with Pedernales Electric Cooperative is on the table in Cedar Park.

What you need to know

City Council gave initial approval Dec. 18 for a renewed and extended franchise agreement with PEC to provide electric service and transmission using city-owned property, such as running electric lines along city-owned streets and easements.

This comes as the previous five-year agreement approved in 2021 is set to expire Jan. 28, 2026.

The details

The new 10-year franchise agreement agreement also requires that the city can use PEC-owned electricity transmission poles for city-owned infrastructure and increases the franchise fee paid to the city from 4% to 4.5%.

This fee covers the use of rights of way used by PEC, with city staff recommending that the fees be used for maintenance and improvements to city infrastructure and services, documents show.

What's next?

To move forward with approving the extended franchise agreement, council will read and consider the item two more times Jan. 8 and 22.
