Cedar Park City Council heard a request at its Nov. 14 meeting for a special use permit, or SUP, to allow a tattoo parlor to operate at 401 E. Whitestone Blvd., Cedar Park.

No action was taken at the meeting, but the topic is set to be voted on at council’s Nov. 21 meeting, according to agenda documents.

The big picture

James and Brooke Dupper own Iron Rite Tattoo in Killeen and Iron Rite Tattoo South in Georgetown. They are hoping to open their latest shop, Don’t Tell Mama Tattoo, in Cedar Park. It would be the first tattoo shop in the city, according to agenda documents.

The shop would operate out of one suite at 401 E. Whitestone Blvd., Cedar Park. The site is a former Allstate Insurance office that is about 1,300 square feet.

What they’re saying

Mayor Jim Penniman-Morin explained that the SUP process is in place to ensure tattoo shops are coming to appropriate areas of the city. Penniman-Morin said there are some places in town that would not lend themselves well to hosting a tattoo parlor, but he didn’t show concern about the plan for Don’t Tell Mama Tattoo.

“Now, between that, Wild West and Whitestone, we’ll have an edgy night life district,” he said, referring to a music venue and a brewery in the area.
