The details
According to a Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification Notices, or WARN, letter to the Texas Workforce Commission, the permanent layoffs will affect offices starting Jan. 26 at the River Place Corporate Park, located near Four Points.
The letter states, "This will not result in closure of the entire facility, but will only impact certain employees selected for layoff."
The Austin cuts are among over 2,200 nationwide layoffs announced by the company since the acquisition closed Nov. 22, including 1,267 jobs at their Palo Alto headquarters.
How we got here
According to a Dec. 7 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company is looking to reduce costs following the acquisition.
With the purchase, semiconductor and software manufacturer Broadcom assumed VMware's net debt of $8 billion, according to a press release.
Further details about severance packages, the Austin office spaces and the reason for the layoffs could not be immediately confirmed with Broadcom.
The bigger picture
The VMware layoffs are among recent cuts to the Austin tech industry this year, including:
- Global professional services company Accenture announced over 1,000 layoffs this year, according to WARN letters.
- Apple and Facebook contractor Cognizant Technology announced 65 layoffs in December, and 56 layoffs in June at North Austin offices, according to WARN letters.
- Austin-based job search company Indeed announced 2,200 layoffs in March.
- Google and Amazon, which both have substantial offices in Austin, cut thousands of jobs in early 2023.
