The owners of Austin Gourmet Popcorn aim to corner the city’s market for retro candy, novelty soda and original popcorn flavors.
General Manager Randy Hern, son of owners Scott and Alison Hern, said the family often visited similar shops when traveling in the Dallas area.
“There just wasn’t anything like that here,” Randy said.
The Herns opened Austin Gourmet Popcorn in October. The store has more than 250 types of candy and 130 types of glass-bottled soda. The shop also sells its own mix of flavors, such as Dirty 6th kettle corn with smoked sea salt, and Zilker Mix, which is caramel popcorn drizzled in white and milk chocolate.
Randy said all 60-plus flavors of popcorn are made in-house from scratch, and the flavors are ones customers will not find anywhere else.
“We just like to have fun with it and see what we can come up with,” he said. “We can create any flavors we want, as long as it tastes good.”
The shop also offers customizable tins of popcorn for events and gifts. Randy said the shop can even print corporate logos on the tins.
The family chose the shop’s location near US 183 and Anderson Mill Road because they are natives of Northwest Austin, Randy said.
“It just made sense to stay up here,” he said.
