A-Tan Asian Bistro & Sushi Bar opened Jan. 29 at 407 Stagecoach Trail, Ste. 101, San Marcos. The menu at the family-owned restaurant includes various traditional and modern sushi dishes.
Co-owner Shu Chen Spurrier said sushi chef Mike Yeh has more than 25 years experience creating sushi and cooking Asian dishes. Yeh moved to Texas from Memphis years ago.
“He quickly learned that people here like spicy and saucy, so that leaves us the winner because he got quickly acquainted with the people here,” Spurrier said. “He created quite a few dishes toward the Texans who like [spiciness].”
Spurrier said Yeh even allows customers to customize their own rolls with whatever ingredients are available. It’s not unusual for customers to have their own rolls named for them either, she said.

Cody Couch plans to open Elevate Bar & Table in May.
Restaurant Manager Matt Johnson, who works with Couch at Cody’s Bistro, said the restaurant will feature “small, upscale, elegant bites” from executive chef Jonathan Smartt as well as craft cocktails.
“It will be a restaurant, but it’s going to mainly be a bar with craft cocktails, everything fresh-squeezed and homemade,” Johnson said.
The restaurant will be located on the second floor of the building that houses A-Tan Asian Bistro & Sushi Bar near the intersection of Stagecoach Trail and Wonderworld Drive in San Marcos.
“We’re really going after sex appeal with the furniture and the décor,” Johnson said. “We’re really looking to market this to the 30-plus side of town.”
Dr. Ryan Cradeur, co-owner and one of nine practicing physicians at My Emergency Room 24/7, 2810 S. I-35, San Marcos, was nominated in January for an Austin Under 40 award. The award recognizes young Austin residents who are affecting change in their community.
Cradeur has been involved in the Miracle Foundation, the Diaper Bank of Austin, Eanes Education Foundation, the Trail Foundation and Wonders and Worries.
Cradeur, a resident of Westlake, opened San Marcos' only freestanding emergency room in June 2014. The clinic can treat everything from colds and fevers to heart attacks and strokes, Cradeur said. The business accepts private and commercial insurance and offers a discount for those paying out of pocket.
