Jamie True is a self-professed nerd. She grew up with parents who were programmers, and she has worked in information technology for two decades, including at NASA and the Department of Defense.
She said she aims to extend her love of science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, subjects to children with her new business,
The Scholar Ship, which opened Dec. 3 at 6001 W. Parmer Lane, Ste. 390.
“People have been coming out in droves saying ‘This is the best idea. The area needs something like this,’” True said. “I want to empower kids and help them know they’re smart.”

The Scholar Ship has a small retail section, but True said she did not just want to be a toy store. The back section of the business is a lab where True hosts daily lessons and experiments, such as growing crystals. She said she plans to rope off a section of the parking lot for larger experiments, such as explosions.
“I want kids to see that there’s more to science than slime and crystals,” she said.
The Scholar Ship can also host parties and other events. True said she plans to host day camps and summer camps and have quarterly events similar to Maker Faires and BattleBots competitions. She is also striving to build relationship with area schools and have children bring in their science projects to learn how to improve upon them for next year’s competitions.
“That way kids can hone their skills,” she said.
The Scholar Ship is open Tue.-Sat. 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sun. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information call 512-382-7543 or visit
