Community comment period opens on proposed groundwater conditions

Bastrop County receives 100% of its water from groundwater, and now residents have a chance to weigh in on future plans to manage that resource, according to the Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District.

The 90-day public comment period is now open for the proposed groundwater “Desired Future Conditions” for aquifers across Groundwater Management Area 12, giving residents and stakeholders a chance to weigh in on long-term water planning decisions.

While water is managed locally, conservation districts work together to plan. Groundwater Management Area 12 includes Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District, which serves Bastrop County, as well as Brazos Valley, Fayette County, Mid-East Texas and Post Oak Savannah. The districts approved the draft plan in April.

The details

The plan sets long-range targets for aquifer levels, spring flows and available groundwater over a 50-year horizon under a process required by Chapter 36 of the Texas Water Code.

Local officials say the planning process is intended to balance water supply needs with conservation, environmental impacts, aquifer conditions and private property rights.

Each district will hold public hearings as part of the state-mandated comment period. Residents can submit feedback in person at hearings or in writing to [email protected]. All comments will be reviewed before a final GMA 12 vote, which must occur before Jan. 5, 2027, according to the Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District.
