Bastrop County Emergency Services District No. 3 is continuing its year-long transition away from using Acadian Ambulance as a vendor.
“We’re about halfway through that, and we’re well ahead of schedule,” said Allen Johnson, executive director of ESD 3. “In fact, we’ll start receiving delivery of our new ambulances in June.”
During a March 24 Bastrop City Council meeting, he outlined several district-operated EMS objectives, including:
- Local senior leadership focused on Bastrop County
- Ability to define the standard of care
- Instill a culture of quality improvement
- Meet service-level expectations
- Tech-enabled, data-driven deployment
- Engagement in the community
- Active integration and participation in the larger public safety community
- Desire to explore and invest in innovation to improve service delivery
What we know
There are 15 ambulances on order, according to ESD 3 officials.
“It is our intent to have eight ambulances, 24 hours a day, with three additional peak trucks,” Johnson said. “So we will have gone, over about a 16-month period, from four ambulances a day to a max of 11, with two supervisors.”
ESD 3 covers the entirety of Bastrop County in its service area after Elgin voters OK’d the services during the Nov. 4 election. The remainder of Bastrop County voters approved the creation of ESD 3 in November 2024.
Place 2 council member Cynthia Meyer shared her gratitude for ESD 3’s presence.
“I just want to say thank you to the people of Bastrop for approving [ESD 3],” she said. “You can see how your taxes are at work, right? It’s critical for the well-being of our community.”
