The city of Bastrop announced Jason Alfaro as its new Parks and Recreation director.

The details

Alfaro, who began his career with the city of Bastrop in 2002 as a maintenance worker, has more than 20 years of experience in local government.

“Through his commitment and leadership, he was promoted to parks foreman in January 2007 and later advanced to parks superintendent in August 2012,” the city said in a statement. “Since then, he has served as parks and recreation director in cities across Texas, gaining valuable expertise that he is now excited to bring back home.”

Those communities include the cities of Kingsville, Jersey Village and Victoria.

What residents should know

Alfaro is a certified parks and recreation professional through the National Recreation and Park Association and a certified arborist through the International Society of Arboriculture.

“I took a little two-year break [from local government] and dealt with tree preservation for a local company in the Austin area, where I dealt with developers, civil engineers and landscape architects,” Alfaro said during a town hall meeting on Sept. 3. “Then I had an opportunity to come back. So I’m definitely excited and am looking forward to all the really great things and working with the community to continue enhancing the quality of life.”

Alfaro began his latest role with the city of Bastrop on Sept. 2.
