Farmers' markets across Bastrop County are drawing steady crowds as residents seek locally grown produce, homemade foods and handcrafted goods.
From gatherings in Bastrop to those in Elgin and Smithville, local officials, including Bastrop County Cares Executive Director Norma Mercado, say each plays a critical part in strengthening the local food system.
“Farmers markets provide fresh, locally grown produce, support small and family-owned farms, and keep food dollars circulating within the local economy,” she said.
Mercado noted that in Bastrop County, farmers markets also serve as community gathering spaces and as an access point for nutrition education and, in some cases, accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.
Bastrop 1832 Farmers Market
The artisan and producer market is open Saturdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and accepts SNAP.
Community GardensThe artisan and producer market is open multiple dates throughout the year. The next will be a Mother's Day vendor market on May 9, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Eden East Farm StandThe artisan and producer market is open Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and accepts SNAP.
Elgin Farmers MarketThe artisan and producer market is open Thursdays, 4-7 p.m., and accepts SNAP.
F.A.M.E. Days The artisan market is open monthly each first Friday, 5-8 p.m.
Main Street MarketThe artisan market is open on multiple dates throughout the year.
Smithville Farmers MarketThe artisan and producer market is open Sundays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. from September to May, and Sundays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. from June to August and accepts SNAP.
VFW Post 6115 Flea MarketThe artisan and producer market is open Saturdays, 7 a.m.-1 p.m.
