The Ride On Center for Kids hosted its 10th annual barn dance April 9 at its facility at 2050 Rockride Lane, Georgetown.


The event helps raise funds for the nonprofit, which provides equine-assisted therapy for children and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges. The group serves more than 200 clients and their families.


The event featured silent and live auctions, dinner and live music from country music performer Cory Morrow.


More than $400,000 was raised.



Red Poppy Festival


The city of Georgetown hosted the 17th annual Red Poppy Festival on April 22-24 on the Square. The event drew a record number of more than 55,000 visitors, said Cari Miller, Georgetown tourism and Convention and Visitors Bureau manager.



Shilling Lecture Series


Southwestern University in Georgetown hosted a lecture by Sister Helen Prejean as part of its Shilling Lecture Series on April 19.


Prejean wrote the book “Dean Man Walking: The Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty That Sparked a National Debate,” which inspired a play, an opera and a film starring Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon.
