Northwest Austin is not the first place in the city an art enthusiast might think to visit, but Jennifer Zimmerman said she is hoping to change that. The wife of District 6 City Council Member Don Zimmerman is a native of Seattle, where first Thursday art walks draw dozens of vendors to the city’s historic downtown area. Zimmerman said she wanted to replicate the event in her district. “I just wanted an avenue to feature some of the great things that are going on in Northwest Austin,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of talent here.” Zimmerman hosted the inaugural First Thursday Art Exhibit on Oct. 1. She said between 50 and 60 people attended to see the work of Northwest Austin resident and Australia native Patricia Carter Feille, who is also Zimmerman’s neighbor. She said she hopes the regular exhibits will increase local artist recognition by providing them with a space to display their work. The next exhibit will open Nov. 5 from 6-9 p.m. at her husband’s district office, 10401 Anderson Mill Road, Ste. 102. The free event will feature food from Foxhole Culinary Tavern, music from Westwood High School graduateJackie Venson and art created by Richard Rutner, who lives near Zimmerman in Canyon Creek. Rutner is a contemporary artist whose paintings feature organic and geometric forms placed in an architecturally inspired landscape, according to his online gallery. “It’s really going to be a beautiful exhibit,” Zimmerman said. For those who cannot attend the event, Rutner’s work will remain on display at the District 6 office until Nov. 16, she said.
