On June 17 Cedar Park hockey team the Texas Stars won the American Hockey League's Calder Cup Championship after defeating the St. John's IceCaps in overtime.

During Game 5 in St. John's in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Stars forward Travis Morin sent a pass to defender Patrik Nemeth, who scored. The 4–3 game secured the Stars' fourth and final tournament victory in the seven-game series against the IceCaps.

The victory is the Cedar Park team's first in the five-year-old team's history. The Stars had already achieved their second journey to the Calder Cup Finals after first reaching the finals during the team's debut season in 2009–10.

On June 3 the Stars began their second trip to the Calder Cup Finals when the team defeated the Toronto Marlies 6–2 during the Western Conference Finals.

In game 1 of the Calder Cup Finals June 8, the Stars opened with a win over the St. John's IceCaps by 6–3 at the Cedar Park Center. But during game 2 on June 9 the Stars fell to the IceCaps by 2–1.

On June 11 the tournament moved to the Mile One Centre in St. John's for game 3, where the Stars defeated the IceCaps in overtime by 2–1. During game 4 on June 16, the Stars won a third victory by 4–3, again in overtime. That put the Stars on track to wrap up the seven-game tournament with a total of four wins.
