George White, Round Rock City Council member Place 2 and mayor pro tem, announced Jan. 14 he would not seek re-election in the May 7 election.

"I have been privileged to serve in a period of unprecedented growth surrounded by fellow council members whose only goal is to provide the highest level of public service," White said in a statement.

White had served on the council for eight years.

Rene Flores, a banker with First Texas Bank, announced Jan. 15 his intention to run for the Place 2 position in May. Flores served on the Planning and Zoning Commission since 2011, and recently completed a five-year stint as a board member for the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce.

"I have always appreciated public service and the role it plays in our daily lives," Flores said in a statement. "I am ready to get to work to win this seat, and work toward helping the city continue to service the needs of its citizens and plan for the growth that this area will see in the coming years."
