IAH, HOU offer new airport amenities as World Cup travelers land in Houston

“Hosting FIFA World Cup 2026 is a defining moment for Houston,” Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for HAS, said in a statement. “At Houston Airports, we understand our role. We are the front door to the city and we are ready to welcome fans, teams, families and travelers from around the world.”

A total of seven matches are scheduled to take place in Houston, five being part of the tournament’s group stages and two being knockout rounds with the Round of 32 and the Round of 16. A handful of expected teams to play include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sweden, Portugal and Saudi Arabia.

The first match at NRG Stadium, temporarily branded as “Houston Stadium” during the FIFA events, is between Germany and Curacao on June 14. The next match in Houston–Portugal versus DR Congo–is scheduled for June 17, the FWC26 Houston website reads.

Managing the impact

With one of the world’s largest sporting events fast approaching, here is a closer look at the improvements made to IAH and HOU by the airway hub, according to a news release:

At IAH:

• A fully operational Terminal E to improve passenger flow and capacity amid travelers’ curb-to-gate experience

• The implementation of new concessions and amenities, such as Landry’s Seafood House at HOU and Simone Biles’ Taste of Gold at IAH, to offer travelers distinctly Houston experiences before boarding or after their arrival
• Upgraded restrooms for added comfort and convenience
• Free, in-terminal fan activations that promote the energy of the World Cup through spin-the-wheel giveaways, photo opportunities, video games, foosball and prizes for travelers who are passing through
• Multilingual customer service teams that can assist passengers in navigating terminals, finding transportation, locating concessions and moving through the airport, all while speaking their language
• Nonstop air service network to connect passengers to every 2026 FIFA World Cup host city and grant them flexibility as they travel between matches
• New and expanded air service that will strengthen Houston’s international reach ahead of the tournament
• Partnerships with the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, the Houston Host Committee and more to aid first-time visitors in Houston with understanding how to get from the airport to Downtown Houston, NRG Stadium and other destinations

HAS recommends travelers plan ahead prior to their trips by reviewing flight statuses and parking availability, as well as allowing themselves extra time during peak periods of travel. Parking reservations can be arranged as little as two hours in advance, HAS officials confirmed.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to run for 39 days across three host countries. The final match of the tournament is scheduled for July 19.
