When Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Houston, threatening widespread destruction and flooding, schools in Conroe ISD closed from Aug. 25 to Sept. 5, giving families the opportunity to hunker down.
However, now that the short-term effects of the storm have passed, families are looking at the long process of recovery and what it will mean for students.
As schools in the Greater Houston area have been forced to shut down due to high waters and storm damage, many students will be displaced from their nearby campuses.
While Conroe ISD officials said it is too early to say whether the district will need to take in additional students, CISD Superintendent Don Stockton said the district did not suffer any damage and all campuses were reopened to students.
Additionally, thanks to a waiver from the Texas Administration Agency, students will not be required to make up missed school days. Hopefully, with the help of the parents, teachers and students in the community, this school year can get back on track.
