Election dates, public art plans and transportation projects are the agenda in Sugar Land and Missouri City this week. Find out what other events are open to residents around the Fort Bend County area now until Friday.
1. Monday, Oct. 17: Code violations and election schedule up for discussion at Missouri City City Council
During the regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m., the council is expected to consider a resolution to change the city’s general election date for mayor and council member positions from May to November, in order to align with other state elections. The City Charter states that elections for the mayor and the at-large city council members must be held in May of each even-numbered year, and elections for district council members must be held in May of each odd-numbered year. However, in September the City of Missouri City Charter Review Commission received a request to consider moving the election date from May to November, according to city documents. Prior to the regular meeting, Council will discuss possible new means of notifying residents and property owners found in violation of city code. This will take place during a special meeting at 6 p.m., which is open to the public.
2. Tuesday, Oct. 18: workshop on Sugar Land’s Public Art Plan
During their regular meeting, Sugar Land City Council will hold a workshop on the progress of the city’s Public Art Plan. The plan is being created as part of the larger Cultural Arts Strategic Plan and Implementation Guide and functions as a multi-year public art plan and implementations guide, according to city documents. The city’s cultural arts manager Lindsay Davis will present the plan’s final draft to Council on Tuesday, and Council is expected to approve it Nov. 1.
3. Tuesday, Oct. 18: Missouri City hearing on transportation projects
Missouri City will hold a public meeting on three infrastructure projects expected to affect city residents directly: reconstruction of Adams Street and Ashmont Drive, and the Glenn Lakes Bridge replacement project. On Adams Street, the city is reconstructing the roadway between Texas Parkway and Fifth Street. For Ashmont Drive, construction is planned to start by summer 2017 and will stretch from Valley Bend to La Quinta drives, according to the city. The Glen Lakes Bridge over Oyster Creek will be reconstructed with 50 percent of funds coming from the Fort Bend County Mobility Bond Program, according to the city. Tuesday’s meeting will last from 6-8 p.m. and take place at the Community Center within the City Hall Complex, located at 1522 Texas Parkway, Missouri City.
