The backbone of buildings: What a truss is and how American Truss Components ensures durability, quality

Strong foundations are everything for building durable homes and commercial spaces. For American Truss Components, that foundation is partnership, craftsmanship and precision.

“My uncle started the company in 1993, and I joined the team at 15,” Principal Josh Dermer said. “From the start, I learned that this isn’t just about making trusses—it’s about building the backbone of every structure with care and precision. That mindset shapes everything we do.”

What began as a small operation has grown into a trusted resource for builders, contractors and developers across Texas and beyond, guided by partners Josh Dermer, Francisco “Pancho” Hernandez and Mitchell Bagwell.

What is a truss?

A truss is a framework of wood or metal that supports a building’s roof. Its triangular design distributes weight evenly, providing maximum strength with minimal material. Trusses form the skeleton that holds up the roof, spanning from wall to wall.

“A properly designed truss ties the entire structure together, keeping it stable,” Principal Mitchell Bagwell said. “In Florida, California, and ts of Texas, they aren’t just helpful—they’re required by code.”

Benefits of a truss system:
  • Structural strength: Helps buildings withstand storms and hurricanes.
  • Longevity: Enhances the life and resale value of homes.
  • Ease for trades: Plumbers, electricians, and HVAC teams can work more efficiently, reducing damage and unnecessary drilling.
  • Precision engineering: Every truss is designed, engineered and inspected for accuracy.
  • Design flexibility: Trusses can be customized for unique roof shapes, vaulted ceilings or complex architectural designs.
The process is fast, precise and reliable

American Truss Components has a reputation for speed without compromising quality. Its process is simple but thorough:
  1. Customers submit building plans.
  2. The team designs the trusses and provides a quote.
  3. Engineered trusses are built, certified by engineers and shipped promptly.
“Our turnaround time sets us apart,” Dermer said. “Once we have the order, we can build the trusses the night before and ship them the next morning.”

Premade trusses are ready faster, so customers can get what they need without delay.

Notable projects

Their portfolio includes residential, commercial and custom work:
  • Mister Car Washes–unique curved wood trusses
  • Luxury homes in The Woodlands, Blue Jack National and Cape Coral, Florida
  • Clubhouses and high-end hotels in Dallas, El Paso and Corpus Christi
The team that drives excellence

American Truss Components has a dedicated team that values people and quality. Everyone, from leadership to shop-floor staff, works closely to ensure projects are handled with care, precision and efficiency.

Dermer, Pancho and Bagwell all work together to lead the company. Any of the three can make decisions and approvals, so customers and employees always have a direct line to leadership.

“We’re a good group from all over, but we’re homegrown and proud of our employees,” Bagwell said. “They understand our work, and without them, we wouldn’t be here. We take care of our customers and our people, and in the end, everybody is happy.”
