Co-founder Jim Carlton explained that the firm has helped individuals and families navigate the complexities of financial planning for nearly 15 years. He said their guiding principle is that success isn’t just about returns, but about clients being able to “put their head on the pillow at night and sleep peacefully.”
The backstory
The story of CHJ is one of experience, evolution and a commitment to personal connection.
Jim began his journey in the investment business over four decades ago at Merrill Lynch. His career path eventually led him to Sterling Bank, where he headed the wealth management group. In August 2010, they ventured out to The Woodlands to establish CHJ Wealth Management, a milestone that marked its 15th anniversary in August.
“We wanted to be a different kind of financial planning firm where we measure our success not by what return someone got on their investments or if we were able to beat somebody else’s benchmark,” Jim said. “What's important to us is that the person or family sitting with us be able to go live their lives and not have to worry about their financial future.”
What is wealth management
At its core, wealth management, or financial planning as Jim described it, is a comprehensive approach to securing an individual's financial future. The services offered by CHJ centers on guiding clients toward their financial aspirations, a process that is deeply personal and multifaceted.
This broad scope can encompass a variety of life goals, including:
- Retirement planning
- Selling a business
- Funding for college
- Saving for a home
- Legacy planning
At CHJ, personalization isn’t just a feature; it’s the foundation of everything they do. As a smaller firm, CHJ offers a level of customization that Jim said allows them to "really tailor-make a portfolio, a plan for an individual and a family."
This allows the firm to provide true customization, ensuring each client receives a financial roadmap that fits their life, not someone else’s template.
That commitment to personal attention begins with how the firm chooses to grow. CHJ intentionally takes on new clients one relationship at a time, allowing them to build meaningful partnerships rooted in trust.
“We don't want to be everything to everyone. We want to be everything for our clients,” Certified Financial Planner Hunter Hernandez said.
Daily updates
One of the most unique and meaningful ways CHJ supports their clients is through daily market updates. What began as a crisis-response tool during the financial turmoil of 2008 has since become a beloved part of the CHJ experience.
In a time when information felt conflicting, chaotic and overwhelming, Jim saw an opportunity and a responsibility to provide something different. That intention grew into a daily email crafted in clear, conversational language that helps clients navigate the complexities of the financial world with confidence and clarity.
“I wanted to communicate to clients almost instantaneously because there was so much uncertainty and fear in the markets,” Jim said. “Every day I am able to filter through the noise of what’s real, what’s not and what matters. It’s something that brings clarity and perspective.”
A message from CHJ
“If you know anybody, any of your loved ones or dear friends, that you think we could help, put us in contact,” Jim said. “When things are changing in your life, that’s a great time to come see us. We’re here to help you create a game plan that makes the transition smoother and less stressful.”
