For nearly 25 years, the Frisco RoughRiders have been a cornerstone of community life in Frisco. But while the team thrilled fans on the field, its technology struggled to keep pace. Years of patchwork fixes left the ballpark’s network outdated, unreliable and prone to failure on game days.

A major network upgrade led by Frisco-based Reliable Technology transformed the fan and staff experience.

“When we first assessed their systems after COVID, the newest piece of equipment was already more than eight years old,” founder and CEO Jason Denton said. “It had become a house of cards. Our recommendation was a complete overhaul.”

Behind the upgrade

Reliable Technology specializes in IT and cybersecurity, delivering secure, scalable network solutions, proactive monitoring and comprehensive support to protect data and ensure smooth operations. Their expertise made them the ideal partner for the RoughRiders’ network overhaul across nearly 20 buildings on the stadium campus.

Reliable Technology assessed the outdated system and developed a multi-phase plan to replace and connect wired and wireless networks, implement a fiber-optic backbone, and integrate advanced security protocols.

They partnered with top Wi-Fi engineers to design a system capable of handling thousands of fans using heavy digital applications while keeping sensitive data and operations secure.

Why is the upgrade important?

The RoughRiders’ network upgrade was essential for ensuring a smooth, safe and connected experience at the ballpark. It was about more than faster Wi-Fi. Before the overhaul, years of patchwork fixes left the system outdated and prone to failure, affecting ticketing, point-of-sale systems and basic connectivity for staff and fans.

The upgrade benefits everyone in the stadium. Fans can now share photos and livestream games without interruptions, while staff can rely on secure, efficient systems to manage operations seamlessly.

“Our fans expect a connected experience when they come to Riders Field, and we want to deliver on that,” RoughRiders general manager Scott Burchett said. “Upgrading our network infrastructure was critical to meet the growing demand for high-speed connectivity, whether that’s for mobile ticketing or sharing their favorite game moments online. This investment ensures our ballpark is keeping pace with what fans expect from a modern live event experience.”

Safety and security

Safety was a top priority, beyond speed and connectivity. The new system includes advanced firewalls, segmented networks and monitoring tools that protect ticketing systems and in-game operations.

These safeguards protect the RoughRiders from cyber threats and ensure fans can enjoy the game with peace of mind, knowing the technology behind the scenes is as strong as the team on the field.

“Cybersecurity is a top priority for us,” Denton said. “We’ve stepped up their protocols four to five times, so fans and staff can enjoy the game knowing the network—and the data behind it—is safe and secure.”

Results speak for themselves

The payoff came quickly. Phase one was completed in May 2024, followed by phase two in June 2025. Just weeks later, the RoughRiders hosted their highest-attended game: over 12,000 fans packed the stadium.

“There wasn’t a single IT issue that night,” Denton said. “Knowing over 12,000 people could share, stream and connect without problems was a huge win.”

After the 2025 season, a third and final phase will roll out, adding more Wi-Fi access points throughout the ballpark. The upgrades will boost the stadium’s network backbone from 1 gigabit to 40 gigabits, a fortyfold increase designed to serve fans and staff for the next decade.

Partnering with FISD

A unique aspect of the RoughRiders’ network upgrade was the involvement of local students from Frisco ISD’s career technical education program.

"For this project, we relied about 90% of our human resources on students from FISD," Denton said.

Students programmed switches, installed Wi-Fi access points, configured firewalls and performed other critical tasks under Reliable Technology’s guidance. Many received certifications and reference letters for their careers.

“This partnership takes what students learn in class and brings it to life. They’re not just hearing about networking concepts; they’re applying them on real projects, with guidance from both industry experts and college-level mentors,” said Kim Biggerstaff, practicum advisor for IT at Frisco ISD's CTE Center. “Just as importantly, students build connections in the field that could lead to internships or job opportunities down the road. On top of the technical side, they strengthen soft skills like teamwork, communication and professional behavior — and even get a head start on industry certifications by working through real-world scenarios.”
