The air hums with excitement as young performers take their mark.

Music spills from the speakers, mixing with the sound of tapping feet, bursts of laughter and the rhythmic call of counts from instructors.

This is a normal day at Time to Shine Performing Arts: a place where hard work and joy meet in perfect harmony.

What began as a two-hour musical theater program has grown into a thriving school offering dance, acting, voice, guitar and piano. The training is structured and deliberate but always designed to keep the magic of performance alive.

Students might start with 30 minutes of voice, 30 minutes of acting and an hour of dance each week, then branch into advanced ballet, tap or voice lessons. Many are looking forward to this year's new Friday night technique and conditioning sessions so that they can keep growing in their art.

“We’re big on technique ... strength building and core,” founder and Director Trisha Baughman said. “If students are running [and simultaneously singing], ... they’re going to have longer stamina when holding that big last note.”

Those extra hours pay off, and it’s this blend of technical precision and passion that has earned Time to Shine recognition on some of the biggest stages in youth theater.

Baughman remembers a moment at the Junior Theater Festival that still gives her chills. While the cast was holding a human built, 10-foot-tall tree formation during “Children of Eden Jr.,” a judge reached for her phone and took a photo.

“That was a ‘wow' moment of ‘We’ve been recognized,’” Baughman said.

Even more powerful than the awards are the comments received from judges who notice the foundation beneath the performance.

“[The judges] turned to the audience ... and said, ‘Every single person in this audience needs to be in class, like these kids,’” Baughman said. “For me, that was a moment of recognition that we’re doing it right.”

It’s after the countless rehearsals and shared victories that the deeper transformation reveals itself: confidence that lasts long after the final curtain.

Baughman recalled one shy student who found her voice. When she entered the program, she was not able to talk to her teachers. Now, she walks right up or emails them to ask clear questions.

“That’s a kid finding their voice,” Baughman said. “She now has confidence ... with all of her teachers.”

That same confidence follows graduates into the world. Many have gone on to top-tier musical theater programs, professional performances and even careers in education. Others carry those skills into entirely different fields, such as business.

Time to Shine’s family-like environment is intentional. The studio maintains a conservative dress code that leaves room for comfort, as well as a ‘no drama at drama school’ policy. Casting choices are made to challenge students, and parents often find themselves just as connected to the community as their kids.

“I think a lot of parents are looking for a home for their kid and a home for themselves,” Baughman said.

This fall, families can explore the studio through free trial classes, designed to match each child with the program that will inspire them most.

“We want them to find the class that’s going to work best for them,” Baughman said.

Whether a child dreams of Broadway or simply wants a safe space to grow, Time to Shine gives them the tools, the training and the encouragement to take the stage with confidence.
