When Gregory Webb talks about his work, there’s no sales pitch, only sincerity.

As the owner of Assisting Hands Home Care of Cypress, he has lived the challenges that many of his clients face.

“Back in 2023, my wife and I provided care to my mother for a short time,” Webb said. “I recognized that seniors truly want to be in their own home. They want to be around their own memories, ... so that became my mission.”

Assisting Hands offers many services, some of which include:
  • Veterans care: Personal care and help with daily activities (aid and attendance)
  • Personal care: Mobility, bathing and transferring assistance
  • Companion care: Socialization and transportation
  • Transitional care: Post surgery
  • Respite care for families
For Webb, a U.S. veteran, starting a home care business was both a way to give back and to create something deeply personal.

“I wanted to pay back to the [veteran] community,” Webb said. “I also wanted to do something where seniors could be in their own home, so providing caregivers allows us to do that.”

Care designed around each individual

Unlike a one-size-fits-all approach, Webb and his team focus on customized care plans tailored to each client’s needs.

“We don’t go with the one-size-fits-all approach,” Webb said. “We cater care plans to the individual. It’s about sitting down, having a conversation [with the families] and getting a thorough understanding of what they’re looking for.”

These conversations go beyond medical needs. They uncover personal history, preferences and daily routines.

“I like to learn about the individual and the things they like,” Webb said. “Is it baseball, football or watching TV? Is it reading or gardening? Then I’ll see if there are any special dietary needs and what they need us for.”

Serving families who need personal time

One of the most meaningful services they offer is respite care.

“I think it’s very important for families to recognize that they can reach out to an organization like ours, have a caregiver come in and if they want to go on a date or go to a movie, it gives them the opportunity to enjoy themselves knowing their loved one is in good hands,” Webb said.

Webb knows many families try to rely on friends or neighbors, but he points out the risks and limitations of that approach. For example, if a friend or neighbor is sick or unavailable, there would be no backup.

“All of our caregivers [have] extensive background checks. ... We’re bonded, and we’re insured,” Webb said. “We are always available.”

More than senior care

While senior care is at the heart of their work, Assisting Hands is expanding its mission. Webb’s team can provide short-term care for those recovering from surgery, which includes adults who are not seniors.

“Our goal is to start focusing on everyone who needs care,” Webb said.

This flexibility and willingness to meet needs wherever they arise reflects a bigger philosophy.

“We’ve walked a day in their shoes,” Webb said. “We’ve been there, done that and we recognize that people may need a break; they just don’t know how to ask for one.”

A team built on heart

Empathy is shared by every member of Webb’s staff, including staffing coordinator Dessa Chevis, an experienced leader who oversees their caregivers to ensure families receive the best care possible. Her own experiences caring for her grandmother and hospice patients shape her approach.

“Some of the clients ... just need someone to talk to, someone to keep them company, someone to give them hope for their last few days that they have here,” Chevis said. “For me, I get a thrill out of knowing that I’m making someone smile, ... changing the way they feel, ... showing them love and lifting their spirits up.”

Webb knows the need for compassionate home care will only grow.

“Each day, 10,000 baby boomers turn 65,” Webb said.

For Webb, the mission remains personal.

“When you’re in a community and you see someone outside, take the extra five minutes to listen,” Webb said. “People are lonely. ... They want someone to talk to. That would be the most rewarding thing for me, thinking about how we can pay back the community.”
