For Dr. Deepika Sharma, dentistry is more than a profession; it’s a way to make a lasting difference in people’s lives. At Tropical Dental Care, where she has worked for the past three years, that philosophy shines through in every appointment, from routine cleanings to transformative smile makeovers.

A calming approach for anxious patients

Dental anxiety is one of the biggest reasons people avoid care, but Dr. Sharma and her team make comfort a top priority.

“We have a lot of patients here that have dental anxiety, whether it’s due to past dental trauma or just a fear of the unknown,” she said. “We offer several forms of sedation. One is nitrous oxide, which is a very minimal form. We also offer oral conscious sedation and IV sedation for bigger procedures.”

Beyond medical options, the team focuses on small touches that make a big impact: neck pillows, blankets, TVs, soothing music and even dimmed lights when needed.

“We sit down, listen to their concerns and ask, ‘What can we do to make this easier [for you],’” Dr. Sharma said.

Building lifelong relationships

One of the biggest reasons Dr. Sharma chose dentistry over other medical professions was the chance to build long-term relationships.

“Most people don’t see their physicians as often, but everyone usually comes to the dentist every six months,” she said. “A lot of my patients know about my kids and my family, so it's nice. It’s like seeing an old friend.”

That personal connection, she said, turns routine visits into something people look forward to rather than dread.

Changing lives, one smile at a time

For Dr. Sharma, some of the most rewarding moments come from seeing how dental care can change a person’s confidence and even their quality of life.

She shared one story about a patient who had been living with only two lower teeth for over a decade. After finally deciding to get a lower denture, the woman left the office in tears of joy.

“She told me, ‘I don’t know why I didn’t do this earlier,’” Dr. Sharma said.

Another patient’s emotional reaction came after receiving crowns to restore worn teeth.

“She was crying afterwards, and not because we got it just right. She was crying because she said that her teeth were now very similar to her mother's teeth, who passed away about three or four years ago,” Dr. Sharma said. “Now, every time she smiles, it reminds her of her mother. She was so happy.”

A balance of technology and personal care

Tropical Dental Care offers advanced technology and a wide range of services, all while keeping the experience approachable and transparent.

The team, which includes longtime oral surgeon Dr. Robert Hoffman, keeps nearly all procedures in-house, from implants and oral surgery to Invisalign, root canals and cosmetic dentistry.

“[We’re able to] listen to our patients, and then provide them with several different options to fit their budget and to fit their choices,” Dr. Sharma said.

The practice’s commitment to continuing education ensures patients benefit from the latest techniques while staying informed about their options.

A practice with deep roots

Tropical Dental Care has served the community for more than 40 years, with many staff members staying for decades. That stability was one of the reasons Dr. Sharma chose the practice after moving to the area.

“I didn’t want to work in a corporate office. I wanted to work for a private, ... family practice,” she said. “At Tropical Dental, everyone truly cares about the patients.”

The team also gives back to the community, including volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club, where the young adults continuously reach milestones such as college graduation and new careers despite their challenges.

“It’s very nice to hear their success stories and see them grow,” Dr. Sharma said.

Looking ahead

As Tropical Dental Care continues to grow, Dr. Sharma hopes to maintain the same level of care that has made the practice a trusted name for decades.

“I hope we can continue to grow and be able to serve our community and our patients,” Dr. Sharma said.
