An experienced leader with Texas roots
Dr. Widmer recently joined the hospital as Medical Director of Cardiovascular Medicine, bringing years of experience as an interventional and structural cardiologist and a passion for advancing heart care.
Dr. Widmer completed his undergraduate studies at Southwestern University before earning his combined MD/PhD from Texas A&M Health Sciences Center in 2009. He went on to complete internal medicine, general cardiology, and interventional/structural cardiology training at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, achieving board certifications in all three areas. Most recently, he served as an interventional cardiologist for Baylor Scott & White in Temple, while also earning the rank of Associate Professor at both Texas A&M and Baylor Colleges of Medicine.
“I’m excited to join this exceptional team and be part of the hospital’s continued growth,” Dr. Widmer says. “We’re committed to providing expert care with the latest treatment options, so patients in McKinney can get the best possible heart care right here in their own community.”

Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital - McKinney has expanded access to quality heart care in communities throughout North Texas and southern Oklahoma. Physicians on the medical staff are highly trained in treating and caring for patients experiencing chest pain or a heart attack. Reacting quickly and compassionately, the physicians and staff provide appropriate cardiac care treatment.
From prevention to innovative treatments and technology, you’ll receive quality care supported by a system with a reputation for excellence. Specialty areas include noninvasive cardiology, cardiac imaging and testing, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, emergency cardiac care, heart failure care, and more.
At the heart of the hospital is a collaborative, team-based approach to patient care. Complex cases are discussed among specialists to ensure patients benefit from the knowledge and expertise of the entire team.
Local, personalized care
With an on-site catheterization lab, patients have access to angioplasty and stent procedures locally. Interventional procedures like these can be performed through small incisions in your groin or wrist using a small tube called a catheter. This allows doctors to diagnose and respond to conditions ranging from aneurysms and atherosclerosis to congestive heart failure.
The hospital provides electrophysiology services, including cardiac mapping technology, for heart rhythm issues such as atrial fibrillation, Long QT syndrome, premature atrial contraction, and more.
The convenient location is also especially important when heart care is needed. If advanced surgery is necessary, patients receive pre- and post-surgical care in McKinney and streamlined access to surgery in Plano or Denton. The hospital also collaborates to provide outpatient care for advanced heart failure and valve disorders and offers access to clinical trials.
No matter the need, the team’s personalized approach and commitment to outstanding service make patients and families feel comfortable and confident.
As the team looks to the future, they’re making plans to grow with McKinney by expanding access to care and introducing even more advanced treatment options.
