Imagine a preschool that looks and feels more like a science museum or a space ship factory than a traditional day care. At the newly opened Amazing Explorers Academy in McKinney, early learning looks a lot like discovery.

A new vision for early learning

With a nationally recognized STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts and math—curriculum and a future-focused mission, the academy is redefining what early childhood education can be.

“Our mission is to engage the mind of the 21st century learner,” Academy Director Julie Zapata said. “We do a lot of hands-on learning, investigative learning to help bring the learning experience to life. The world around us is changing, and we are preparing them for that.”

According to the founder of Amazing Explorers, Fabrizio Spinelli, the school’s vision is simple yet bold: “bringing the future to the present and launching young minds into the next generation.” This vision drives everything from the classroom design to the curriculum, ensuring that students are immersed in an environment that fosters curiosity, innovation and a love for learning.

Programs tailored to every age

Amazing Explorers offers a variety of programs that bring the STEAM curriculum to life, each one tailored to the developmental stage of the children they serve:
  • Infants and ones: individualized care and learning supporting rapid development through curiosity, creativity and connection
  • Toddlers: hands-on learning that builds early literacy, math and pre-STEM skills through exploration and creativity
  • Threes and fours: play-based, hands-on learning that encourages curiosity, creativity and collaboration through STEM thinking, project work and early literacy
  • Before and after school: a flexible program that supports working families with time for homework, plus engaging STEM, physical and creative activities
  • Summer camps: engaging, themed camps that inspire exploration and critical thinking through hands-on STEM activities during school breaks

But the learning doesn’t stop at academics. Social-emotional development is a cornerstone of the academy’s philosophy.

One unique feature is the zen zone, a dedicated space that teaches students to recognize and regulate their emotions using color-coded zones. Teachers also use inclusive language and behavior charts that frame actions as red or green choices—removing shame and encouraging self-awareness.

Building trust through safety and experience

At Amazing Explorers Academy, creating a safe and trustworthy environment is just as important as delivering a cutting-edge curriculum.

“We know parents are entrusting us with their most precious treasures,” Zapata said. “That’s why safety is our top priority from the moment a child walks through the door.”

The facility features secure, double-locked entryways accessible only by personalized codes and a dedicated app, ensuring only authorized individuals can enter. Classrooms are equipped with cameras, allowing parents to check in virtually throughout the day. Additionally, real-time updates on meals, activities and daily milestones are also shared through the app, building transparency and peace of mind.

Zapata brings a wealth of experience to her role, having worked in early childhood education since she was 18. As an adoptive mother of five and former foster parent, she understands firsthand the importance of nurturing each child’s unique needs.

“My background as a behavioral therapist and my years of working with children give me the tools to support their growth, both academically and emotionally,” Zapata said. “I’m passionate about making sure every child feels safe, loved and excited to learn.”
