Power outages don’t wait: Be ready with Houston Equipment Repair generator solutions

Sponsored by: Houston Equipment Repair

Reliable Houston generator experts – family-owned business specializing in generator repair, installation, and backup power solutions with top brands like Generac and DuroMax.

Houston Equipment Repair has grown from a small garage hobby into a trusted name in generator installation and service across the Houston area. The company offers expert solutions in portable, air-cooled and liquid-cooled systems to keep homes and businesses powered during outages.

Community Impact sat down with the owners Reed and Brittney Smith to learn how the 2021 freeze sparked their growth, what sets their service apart and why early preparation is key to peace of mind.

What inspired you to start Houston Equipment Repair, and how would you describe the business today?

Reed Smith:
About seven years ago, I started fixing small engines as a hobby. It was something I did on the side for friends and family. Then the 2021 freeze hit, and everything changed. There was a huge demand for portable generator repairs, and hardly anyone was available to help. That’s when we started doing field repairs, and things quickly grew from there. Soon, people were asking if we could install generators too. We evolved and were able to start from a place of deep knowledge about how the equipment works. What began in a garage has grown into what we are today.

What sets Houston Equipment Repair apart and why should readers choose you for their generator needs?

Reed Smith:
Houston Equipment Repair stands out because of our deep understanding of how generators work, not just as installers, but as experts in engine repair and maintenance. We began as a hobby fixing small engines and grew from there, always focusing on providing personalized, reliable service. We offer a range of packages to fit various needs, ensuring there’s a solution for every situation. Our experience, commitment to quality and customer-focused approach make us a trusted choice for all your generator needs.

What generator packages does Houston Equipment Repair offer?

Reed Smith:
We offer three main generator packages: portable, air-cooled and liquid-cooled.
  1. Portable: This package provides a flexible and reliable backup power solution for essential circuits during outages, without requiring a permanent installation. It can power a variety of appliances, such as refrigerators and lights, making it an affordable and practical choice for smaller needs.
  2. Standby air-cooled: These generators automatically kick in during a power outage, offering a dependable backup power system for homes. Air-cooled generators are the most common choice, ideal for average-sized homes, and are known for their ease of use and cost-effectiveness.
  3. Standby water-cooled: A more advanced option, water-cooled generators utilize a liquid cooling system to regulate temperature during operation. They are designed to handle larger homes and commercial buildings, providing more power and efficiency than air-cooled models. These generators are best for those needing higher capacity and continuous operation.

What is the Smart Start service, and how does it protect customers during storms or outages?

Brittney Smith:
The Smart Start service is designed to protect customers by making sure their generators are fully ready before the power goes out. Generators require a break-in service after the first 25 hours of run time to flush out metal shavings and debris from manufacturing, which is essential to avoid damaging the engine or voiding the warranty. Most people don’t reach those 25 hours until they’re in the middle of an outage, which puts them in a tough spot: either risk running the generator or turn it off mid-outage.

With Smart Start, we accelerate that process right after installation by running the generator for a 25-hour test run. This allows it to be fully ready to run for 200 more hours when you actually need it.

What is the best time to purchase a generator?

Brittney Smith:
The best time to buy a generator is before a storm is even on the radar. If something is already coming, it’s likely too late. It’s always better to be proactive than to go through another outage saying, ‘We should have done this sooner.’ If you’re already thinking about it, just do it—you’ll never regret having backup power when you need it.

Even if the power is out for just a day or two, having a generator means life continues as normal. You won’t be scrambling for ice, gasoline or non-perishable food, and your family can stay comfortable and entertained.
