Real stories of health, confidence after bariatric surgery at UTMB Health

Sponsored by: UTMB Health

Dr. Lauren McTaggart performing bariatric surgery at UTMB Health to help patients lose weight and gain confidence

For patients of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) Bariatric Surgery Program, weight loss is only part of the story.

With the expert care of surgeons such as Dr. Sarah Samreen and Dr. Lauren McTaggart, patients of the program, which has been named a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program Center of Excellence, as approved by the American College of Surgeons, are not only losing weight but also reclaiming their lives.

Patient testimony: Lauren Burkhalter

Lauren Burkhalter, who underwent vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery with Dr. Samreen in December 2020, says her life has been completely transformed. Now four and a half years post-surgery, Burkhalter reflected on the journey that led to a 125-pound weight loss, bringing her from 276 pounds down to a healthy range between 147-155 pounds.

"The biggest change has been my confidence in all aspects of life," Burkhalter said. "Traveling is easier, shopping is fun, dating is not as dreadful, and I just feel good."

While the immediate post-surgery period can be daunting, Burkhalter emphasized that long-term success is achievable with dedication.

“Maintenance can be difficult,” Burkhalter said, describing the challenges that arise after the initial "honeymoon phase" of rapid weight loss. “Going back to old habits is easy, but I’m so grateful for this tool. Listening to my body has been key.”

Burkhalter identifies body dysmorphia as an unexpected challenge in her journey, but said staying focused on her reason for choosing surgery helps her navigate the ongoing struggles.

“Sometimes I still see myself as that girl who was 276 pounds,” Burkhalter said. “I had so many people tell me ‘don't fix what isn’t broken’ or ‘surgery is the easy way out.’ It is not the easy way out; there are many struggles you will face. However, looking back five years ago, I would do it all over again.”

Patient testimony: Don Sweeney

Similarly, Don Sweeney, who had a gastric sleeve procedure with Dr. Samreen in July 2023, described the experience as life-changing. Sweeney has lost 110 pounds from his heaviest weight and continues working toward his goals.

"I have gone through so many changes, both physical and mental," Sweeney said. "I have gone from a size 48 pant to a 38 and from a 2-3XL shirt to an XL. It is so uplifting to be able to say that. Mentally, I have a sense of accomplishment and a much more positive image of my body, where in the past I was embarrassed by how big I was."

Sweeney’s surgery has also brought significant health improvements. He is now off blood pressure and cholesterol medications, a milestone he once thought was out of reach.

"After my surgery, my whole family has gotten healthier, and we have been able to break the cycle of obesity," Sweeney said.

Sweeney also reflected on the emotional journey that comes with such a major lifestyle change. He emphasized that while the surgery is a powerful tool, lasting success requires dedication.

"It’s not a shortcut. You still have to put in the work," Sweeney said. "Bariatric surgeries are not magical procedures. The results you desire take some work, but it is so worth it.”

Support after surgery

Both Burkhalter and Sweeney credit UTMB Health’s Bariatric Surgery team for providing the foundation for their success, highlighting the consistent follow-up care and unwavering support from Dr. Samreen and her team.

“I now do yearly follow-ups with the bariatric team,” Burkhalter said. “Dr. Samreen, Dr. McTaggart and the bariatric staff all play a role in maintenance after my surgery.”

For Burkhalter and Sweeney, the journey was never just about the number on the scale. It was about taking back control of their lives, building confidence and discovering a healthier, more fulfilling path forward.

Both emphasized a powerful message: "Do this for you," a reminder that true success comes from prioritizing personal health and happiness, not seeking validation from others.
