Buda is gearing up for a celebration that blends community spirit, local culture and music in a way that is as unique as the city itself. The 144th anniversary of Buda’s founding will be marked with the fourth annual Buda's Birthday Music Festival, a three-day event that has evolved from a simple birthday party into a beloved festival drawing residents and visitors alike.

Buda’s Birthday Festival began in 2018 as a small, heartwarming celebration with bubbles, cupcakes and family-friendly activities to mark the city’s April 1 Founder’s Day. By 2022, it officially became Buda’s Birthday Music Festival—a full-fledged celebration honoring the city’s founding in 1881 while showcasing its thriving talent.

“Each year, we aim to offer something new—whether it’s bigger musical acts, more local vendors or interactive experiences—so that everyone, from longtime residents to first-time visitors, feels a part of Buda’s story,” said Lysa Gonzalez, Director of Community Relations and Destination Services.

Friday, April 4: Kickoff Parties

This year’s festival kicks off on Friday with the Buda’s Birthday kick-off parties at Meridian and Nate’s.

Meridian, a well-known Buda hangout that transforms from a cafe during the day to a lively venue at night with music, cocktails and medicinal mocktails, will feature musicians Mayeaux and Broussard on their deck located at 200 Main St.

Nate’s, a beloved Buda staple offering coffee by day and cocktails by night, will welcome musician Keith Sanders to its stage at 306 S. Main St.

“The kick-off parties are geared toward adults because they are held at popular nightlife spots,” Gonzalez said. “The performances are free, and both locations will offer drink specials.”

Saturday, April 5: Buda's Birthday Music Festival

Buda’s official birthday celebration begins with a full day of family-friendly fun at Buda Amphitheater. The event features live music from a diverse lineup of artists, alongside carnival rides and food and craft vendors.

There will also be a special birthday card mural by local artist Gena Destri, which attendees can sign. As part of the ongoing tradition to celebrate Buda’s humble beginnings, free cake will be available for all.

The musical lineup features a mix of rising stars and established artists. James McMurtry kicks off the performances with his Americana storytelling, followed by co-headliner, teenage guitar prodigy Grace Bowers, known for her bluesy rock style. The night’s headliner, Bob Schneider, will bring his signature blend of folk, rock and pop influences to the stage.

As the evening progresses, Buda will honor its heritage with the Local Legend Ceremony. This special recognition pays tribute to influential figures who have made a lasting impact on the city.

“This year, we are honoring Helen and Renee Alcala, who opened Buda’s first Mexican restaurant, Helen’s Casa Alde, in 1980. Both have since passed, but they made a multi-generational impact on Buda,” Gonzalez said. “Helen was a beloved local lunch lady, feeding the community from the time they were children through adulthood.”

Immediately after the Local Legend Ceremony, Buda will be officially recognized as a Music Friendly Destination by the Texas Music Office. This designation highlights the city’s commitment to supporting live music and fostering a vibrant local scene.

The night will close with a stunning drone show by Verge Aero, featuring hundreds of synchronized drones lighting up the sky with vibrant formations and patterns symbolic to Buda.

American with Disabilities Act compliant parking will be available at the event, with designated routes to the festival grounds. American Sign Language interpreters will also be present for both the Local Legend Ceremony and the Music Friendly Destination Ceremony. Additionally, quiet zones will be set up throughout the park for those who need a break from the noise.

Sunday, April 6: Birthday Blues Brunch

Buda’s Birthday Blues Brunch is a popular event that brings together great music and delicious food, adding a unique twist to the city’s birthday celebrations. Held at local restaurants across Buda, this event features live performances and food and drink specials.

"After an exciting adventure or amazing party, you wake up the next day and think, 'Wow, that was so much fun. I'm a little sad it's over,’” Gonzalez said. “We decided to call it the Buda’s Birthday Blues Brunch because it feels like the perfect ending to a great weekend.”
