Easco Air Conditioning and Heating founder talks faith, family, foreseeable HVAC changes

Sponsored by: Easco Air Conditioning and Heating

Clyde Tauriainen moved from the snowy, cold winters of the north to the warm, sunny climate of Texas, eager to start a new chapter in life. From the beginning, he was determined to provide Texans with the best possible indoor comfort while continuing his career in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and climate control.

In January 1984, Tauriainen founded Easco Air Conditioning and Heating, a company that has become a trusted name for residential and commercial HVAC services.

With four children and two grandsons, the Tauriainen’s family values have shaped Easco’s foundation—balancing business with family and always striving to give glory to God.

“I get the pleasure of working alongside Alena, my wife of 33 years, and two sons Joshua and Caleb who have continued the legacy of providing safety and comfort to thousands of residential and commercial customers,” Tauriainen said.

Easco’s mission goes beyond providing comfort and safety through high-quality HVAC solutions. The company has embraced every industry change, ensuring that their team remains at the forefront of HVAC innovation. From refrigerant transitions to air quality solutions, Easco continues to influence the HVAC world, setting an example of responsible, customer-focused service.

With a 1,200-square-foot dedicated training facility, Easco University, the company invests in its employees’ growth, ensuring that the team is always prepared to meet customer needs. Easco’s team of professionals is passionate about what they do and continues to learn, grow and innovate to serve their community better.

They also take pride in educating the public and their customers about upcoming changes and important things they should be aware of, ensuring everyone stays informed and prepared for the future of HVAC.

Some of the current issues Easco wants to address include:
  • The Environmental Protection Agency enacting its Technology Transition Rule
  • Rising costs of materials due to tariffs
  • The importance of indoor air quality
  • The importance of regular HVAC maintenance
  • Upcoming seasonal changes
Understanding these changes is essential for homeowners and businesses alike, as they can impact everything from energy efficiency and system longevity to overall comfort and costs. Easco broke down what these developments mean and how customers can best navigate them.

The EPA’s Technology Transition Rule

One of the most significant recent shifts in the HVAC industry involves refrigerants. The EPA has enacted its Technology Transition Rule, which has impacted the use of R-410A refrigerant, a commonly used refrigerant in homes. Due to its high global warming potential, R-410A is being phased out in favor of newer refrigerants that are more environmentally friendly. R-32 and R-454B are among the new A2L refrigerants that offer a lower GWP, helping to reduce the environmental impact of HVAC systems.

Easco will continue to carry and sell equipment with R-410A refrigerant, which remains legal until 2026, ensuring customers have options that fit their needs.

Rising costs due to tariffs

However, the shift in refrigerants isn’t the only challenge that Easco and homeowners face. Rising tariffs on materials like copper, aluminum and steel have led to price increases across the HVAC industry.

Easco understands that these increases can put a strain on homeowners and businesses, which is why the company strives to offer competitive prices while maintaining high-quality service.

The importance of indoor air quality

In addition to refrigerant changes and price increases, the importance of indoor air quality has become more apparent than ever. According to Tauriainen, indoor air can be up to 20 times more polluted than outdoor air, with particulates, chemicals and allergens affecting respiratory health.

“Easco offers comprehensive air quality testing and will provide reports that highlight areas of concern,” Tauriainen said.

Their team is equipped to install high-efficiency filtration systems that can address these issues, improving indoor air quality and comfort. In addition, Easco provides a variety of other services to enhance air quality and system efficiency, including UV technology, sanitation to address microbial contamination, duct cleaning and repairs, ensuring homes and businesses maintain a safe and comfortable environment.

The importance of regular maintenance

Easco also understands that regular maintenance is crucial to the longevity and efficiency of HVAC systems. Routine maintenance helps prevent untimely breakdowns, which can be costly and disruptive. Easco recommends that residential customers schedule maintenance twice a year, ideally in the spring and fall. For commercial customers, at least two visits—one in the spring and one in the fall—are essential to keep systems running smoothly year-round, though some clients may require quarterly or more frequent maintenance.

Improper air filtration, dirty equipment or blocked airflow can lead to issues like odors, water leaks, decreased efficiency and a shortened lifespan of the system. Without regular maintenance, these small problems can escalate into expensive repairs or replacements.

Upcoming seasonal changes

As spring and summer approach, HVAC systems will need to work harder to keep homes and businesses cool. Scheduling maintenance now ensures that air conditioners run efficiently before the intense Texas heat sets in, preventing costly breakdowns when they're needed most.

Warmer weather also brings an increase in allergens like pollen and mold, which can circulate indoors and impact respiratory health. By preparing in advance, homeowners and businesses can stay comfortable and breathe easier all season long.

“It is important for homeowners to know that humidity in the home should not go below 35% in the winter and ideally 50% the rest of the year,” Tauriainen said. “Not having the humidity around these amounts can lead to more serious issues.”

Easco’s commitment to a better planet and community

Easco’s commitment to providing top-notch service doesn’t stop with HVAC systems. The company is environmentally responsible, recycling portions of all spent equipment and ensuring that hazardous materials are disposed of safely. Their technicians are trained to handle refrigerants in a way that meets both safety and environmental standards, and they continue to embrace new technologies that support the planet’s well-being.

Beyond their work in HVAC, Easco is deeply committed to giving back to the community. The company supports various causes, including programs for widows, orphans, and local church ministries.

Additionally, they fully believe in the vision of Court Appointed Special Advocates and are title sponsors of the All About Kids Expo event April 26. As active members of three chambers of commerce and the Texas Air Conditioning Contractors of America, Easco continues to strengthen community ties, fostering a culture of service, responsibility and support.
