“We started off [providing services for] youth and veterans,” Shannon Gowen, Vice President of Marketing and Communications said. “We've since expanded, and we're hoping by early March to be covered by insurance.”
Making counseling more accessible
One of the unique aspects of the YMCA’s counseling program is its non-clinical setting. Rather than visiting a medical facility, individuals, whether members or not, can walk into their local YMCA for services. This approach helps reduce the stigma often associated with seeking mental health care.
“People feel comfortable with the [YMCA] environment. They trust it,” Gowen said. “We’ve been seeing articles saying there's a huge need [for counseling services]. [Many facilities] have long wait lists to get access. The great thing about our counseling services is that you'll be seen within two weeks, guaranteed.”

Diversity in counselors and services
The YMCA has been intentional about ensuring its counseling team reflects the diverse backgrounds of the community. The staff includes Spanish-speaking counselors, veterans and specialists in family counseling, giving individuals the opportunity to find a provider who understands their unique experiences.
“We want to make sure that everyone who comes to us feels included,” Gowen said. “We make sure to select a team that can understand everybody's unique needs.”
Scholarships and financial assistance
In addition to gaining insurance coverage in the near future, the YMCA’s Open Doors Scholarship Program ensures financial limitations don’t prevent anyone from accessing services. The program, which also applies to gym memberships, summer camps and personal training, provides assistance to those in need.
“We don't want the cost to turn anyone away,” Gowen said. “If you're interested in any [of our programs], we'll find a path for you.”

A vision for the future
The YMCA plans to continue expanding its mental health services across all 11 locations in Greater San Antonio.
“The vision is to offer counseling services in all of our locations,” Gowen said. “Mental health is huge, so this is another way that we’re showing our help in wellness.”
The locations that currently offer counseling services include:
- Davis-Scott Family YMCA (1213 Iowa St.)
- Harvey E. Najim Family YMCA (3122 Roosevelt Ave.)
- Schertz Family YMCA (608 Schertz Parkway)
- Thousand Oaks Family YMCA (16103 Henderson Pass)
- Walzem Family YMCA (5538 Walzem Road)
- Westside Family YMCA (2900 Ruiz St.)
- YMCA at O.P. Schnabel Park (9606 Bandera Road)

For those who may feel hesitant about starting counseling, Gowen offered reassurance:
“Don't be nervous,” she said. “We have a really great team. They’re very welcoming.”
