The City of Tomball is gearing up for its 13th annual Recycling Day event. It is set to take place April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lone Star College in Tomball. Part of the city’s Spring Cleanup Week, the event provides residents with a convenient and responsible way to dispose of unwanted items while promoting sustainability within the community. While no registration is required for Recycling Day, residents must register in advance to participate in Spring Cleanup Week.

“One of our goals is to give back to the community and give them the opportunity to dispose of their unwanted items in a safe and sustainable way,” Public Works Director Drew Huffman said.

Community response to Recycling Day has been strong over the years.

“For us to be able to host this event right here in Tomball helps [community members] tremendously. They don’t have to fight through the Houston traffic to dispose of those items,” Huffman said. “We average around 200 participants. It's a great turnout. We have a lot of people in our area that look forward to the event, so it’s exciting.”

Organizing the event

Planning for the event begins shortly after the previous year’s Recycling Day concludes.

“[We begin] lining up vendors, making sure that our dates are set, start passing out communication and posting on social media so that people know when [the next] Recycling Day will be,” Huffman said.

The city partners with businesses specializing in recycling to ensure that materials are processed responsibly.

This year’s vendors include:The city also works with Tidy Up Tomball, a local volunteer organization, to help run the event efficiently.

Measuring success and looking forward

The City of Tomball carefully monitors the event’s impact, keeping detailed records of attendance and the total volume of materials collected.

“We track numbers and report every year on how many tires we collect, [as well as] how many pounds of documents for shredding and electronics [are recycled],” Huffman said.

The records from last year show the following:
  • 221 participants
  • 12,061 pounds of e-waste
  • 4,000 pounds of paper/cardboard
  • 1,760 pounds of household recyclables
  • Six truckloads of tires
