The City of New Braunfels’ recreation center, Das Rec, continues to grow with new programs, facility updates and a commitment to serving residents of all ages.

Located at 345 Landa St., Das Rec offers gym equipment, personal training, a lap pool, an indoor track, pickleball courts and youth sports camps.

The 77,000-square-foot fitness center also offers group classes, such as:
  • Barre
  • Beginner’s yoga
  • Chair yoga
  • Cycle strength fusion
  • Pilates
  • Zumba
  • Aqua boot camp and more
With nearly 20,000 members, the community-focused center provides a welcoming environment that fosters fitness, fun and social connection.

“We're at 19,441 members, and I don't foresee that growth slowing down,” Recreation Manager Amy Smith said.

What’s new at Das Rec?

Das Rec is set to enhance its outdoor turf area with a new shade structure, creating additional workout space for members. This upgrade will provide much-needed relief from the Texas heat, allowing for expanded programming and a more comfortable outdoor fitness experience.

In addition to facility improvements, Das Rec is introducing new programs designed to meet the evolving needs of the community.

One significant initiative is the Kulture City program, which promotes sensory-friendly spaces within the facility. This program ensures that individuals with sensory sensitivities have access to designated quiet areas, noise-reducing headphones and other supportive resources.

“This is another way we’re working towards being more inclusive and open to the needs of everybody so they can participate in a way that's best for them,” Recreation Services Manager Stephanie Chelar said.

In response to community demand, the facility has also expanded its homeschool programs, adding a homeschool swim program alongside its existing gym-based activities. Additionally, partnerships with organizations such as Manchester School of Soccer and local volleyball clubs offer specialized sports training for young athletes.

For seniors, Das Rec recently launched a senior walking group, providing an opportunity for older adults to stay active while socializing. The center also offers a variety of fitness classes tailored to different age groups and abilities.

Community connection

Das Rec’s impact extends beyond fitness—it fosters a strong sense of community. Smith said one of the most distinctive aspects of the facility is its inclusive and welcoming environment.

“It's different from other fitness centers that I've worked at—not just with our team, but also with our members,” she said. “There’s always something going on, and everyone is having a good time.”

This atmosphere is reflected in the diverse range of visitors, from young children attending camps to seniors enjoying group exercise classes. The facility’s staff, ranging in age from 16 to 60, share a passion for creating a positive and engaging space for all members.

Find out more

As Das Rec continues to evolve, its mission remains the same: to provide high-quality programs and a welcoming environment for all residents.
