Texas Protax helps Austin homeowners, businesses lower property taxes, protest assessments

Texas Protax helps Austin homeowners, businesses lower property taxes, protest assessments

Sponsored by: Texas Protax

For Austin homeowners and businesses, the arrival of property tax assessments each April often brings frustration and concern. For Texas Protax, it marks the beginning of another year dedicated to advocacy. Since its founding in 1988, the company has specialized in protesting property tax valuations, working to secure fair assessments and financial relief for its clients.

“When people get the notice of appraised value and are upset, they can hire somebody at the appraisal district and hopefully walk away with a lower number. That’s what we do,” President Gil Cowan said.

A commitment to advocacy

Texas Protax stands out for its dedication to serving everyday residents who might otherwise struggle to challenge their assessments.

“We're doing our part to keep Austin weird," senior property tax consultant David Brown said. “We pride ourselves on focusing not only on high dollar houses and large businesses, but also on smaller homes and people who aren't necessarily living in the most expensive parts of Austin. They still need representation.”

Ensuring consistent expertise and dedicated service, Texas Protax employs full-time professionals with years of experience.

“Our newest agents have been here for four or five years, and our senior agents have been here between 15 and 30 years,” Cowan said. “We encourage and subsidize our employees' designations. All of them are incentivized to learn more constantly.”

Educating and empowering clients

Beyond representation, Texas Protax prioritizes client education, keeping homeowners informed about the property tax system and their rights.

“We're one of the only firms that actually educates and speaks to our clients,” Brown said. “We pick up the phone regularly and answer emails. We have a blog and social media posts that attempt to keep our clients apprised of different events, deadlines and legislative changes that are going on with the property tax system.”

To further support homeowners and businesses, the firm sends out an annual request for information, giving clients the opportunity to share any recent improvements, refinances or damages that could impact their valuation. This process helps ensure the most accurate assessment possible and provides essential details for protest filings.

A proven track record

Texas Protax’s client-focused approach delivers measurable results.

“Our agents did 38.67% of all formal hearings in Travis County in 2024,” Cowan said.

With an in-depth understanding of the local market and the appraisal district’s methodology, the team crafts tailored arguments for each case.

“Most agencies are waiting for the appraisal district to offer them something,” Brown said. “Our agents are here conservatively from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., so they can prepare their arguments and present their cases in a clear and compelling way.”

The future of Texas Protax

As Texas Protax continues to grow, its mission remains the same: advocating for fair assessments and ensuring homeowners receive the representation they deserve.

With an experienced team, a commitment to transparency and a dedication to client advocacy, Texas Protax is determined to keep fighting—one protest at a time.
