Affordable health care at AGE’s Thrive Center helps seniors enhance independence, wellbeing

Affordable health care at AGE’s Thrive Center helps seniors enhance independence, wellbeing

Sponsored by: AGE of Central Texas

A new adult day health care center has opened in South Austin, providing daytime medical and therapeutic services and activities for older adults with dementia, disabilities and other critical needs. Licensed by the state of Texas to serve up to 75 adults, the Thrive Social & Wellness Center provides a safe, structured environment aimed at enhancing the well-being of both older adults and their caregivers. Members can stay from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or sign up for a shorter visit based on their needs.

Comprehensive care and activities

The Thrive Center’s services go beyond socialization. A licensed vocational nurse is on-site to provide regular health monitoring, ensuring participants receive medical attention as needed.

“A lot of times older adults don't see doctors on a regular basis,” Chief Executive Officer Suzanne Anderson said. “Because we have an LVN on-site, it allows us to continuously check in with them to make sure they are healthy.”

Additionally, caregivers—many of whom juggle full-time jobs and family responsibilities—can take a much-needed break while knowing their loved ones are in good hands.

AGE’s Thrive Social & Wellness Center offers cognitive and physical activities designed to stimulate the mind and body. From brain games and music therapy to chair yoga and balloon volleyball, each day is structured to promote engagement and mobility.

“Sitting at home and watching television doesn't provide activities for the brain or get people’s bodies up and moving,” Anderson said. “Thrive does that through direct activities. We provide what I call mind, body and soul stretching.”

A highlight of the center is its outdoor space, designed with safety and accessibility in mind. The garden features a walking path through a butterfly garden, lush vegetation, and ample seating and shade.

A more affordable alternative to senior care

One of the key advantages of AGE’s Thrive Center is its affordability compared to other senior care options. While 24-hour in-home care can cost around $75,000 annually and assisted living more than $64,000, private-pay rates at the Thrive Center average $75 per day, totaling approximately $19,000 annually for full-time attendance. The center also accepts Medicaid and Veterans Affairs benefits, and works with each private-pay family to create a payment option that meets their needs. This ensures quality care is accessible for families facing financial constraints.

Member impact

The impact of the level of care received by AGE’s Thrive Center members is such that both the members and their caregivers experience an improved quality of life. One participant, who suffered a traumatic brain injury, has made significant strides in his recovery thanks to the center’s therapeutic activities as well as physical and speech therapy. Initially dependent on a wheelchair, he can now walk with a walker—a transformation that has given his sister, his primary caregiver, peace of mind and the ability to maintain her job.

“We have a particular member who has been coming here for 10 years,” Anderson said. “He just beams when he's in here; he enjoys coming and feels like it is his home away from home. It’s a part of his daily routine, and he looks forward to being here.”

The center is making a real difference in the lives of both seniors and their families, offering a supportive environment where health and independence are prioritized. Whether you’re looking for a safe space for your loved one or simply need some help as a caregiver, AGE’s Thrive Center is here to help as the most affordable option for daytime care in Central Texas.
