Baylor Scott & White is expanding its Central Texas footprint with a five-story patient tower in Round Rock that includes a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an expansion of the labor and delivery unit, and additional patient beds.

The medical center will also feature additional cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology labs, a new hospital entrance and lobby, new chapel space, and new areas devoted to education and workforce development. The emergency department now has a new entrance, lobby and triage space, as well as additional patient care areas for those with more minor injuries. As part of the project, the team added a larger space for emergency medical service teams who transport patients to the hospital.

In this Q&A with Community Impact, Vice President of Operations Andrew Bennett and Vice President of Patient Care Trenton Vaughan, MSN, RN, NE-BC share details about the new medical center and how it will benefit the growing population in Williamson County.

What does the new space look like? How will patients feel when they walk in?

Bennett: The new space is a serene, calming environment, while also having all the latest and greatest technology. There are a lot of windows in the new space, especially when you walk into our new main entrance. It's very bright with wall-to-wall windows that overlook the new healing garden. There are a lot of personal touches that really enhance the experience for our patients and visitors.

What was the motivation for Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Round Rock to expand now?

Bennett: Williamson County has been growing rapidly. The population has grown by over 100,000 people in the last couple of years and that all creates more demand for hospital services. We're really pleased that the way we're expanding the site gives us the ability to continue to grow to meet those needs, as we don't expect for the growth in Williamson County to slow down.

Vaughan: The number of patients we see here has grown by about 30% in the last couple years. These are knowledgeable patients who have done their research and know what they want. We want to meet those needs. We want to exceed those expectations.

How will these new services benefit the community?

Bennett: We continue to invest in multiple service lines and try to make sure that we have the services our patients need right here, close to home. We’re excited that, paired with our physical growth, we are also making an investment into resources like our app that can help us offer a high-level customer experience.

What are the advantages of the hospital having a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit?

Vaughan: The presence of a NICU offers peace of mind for all expectant mothers, whether they’re a first-time mom or they’ve had multiple pregnancies. You want to be close to your support system in times of crisis and stress, so having it here locally is really a big win for the community. We've got you. We're here for you. We want to give you the best experience possible.

How has the staff been reacting to the expansion?

Vaughan: The staff had the opportunity to explore the new space and they love it. There were literal ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ from them.

Bennett: In addition to the current employees who are looking forward to the new space, we’re hiring approximately 200 new team members to work here on the Round Rock campus. Quite a few of them are in orientation right now. We have had the benefit of putting a lot of investment into the workforce here locally, both with the programs on our campus and also collaborations with local colleges and high schools to continue to grow that talent pipeline for those careers that we need to continue to care for the growing population.
