From school project to local business: Premier Cuts celebrates 20 years

What began as a college business project has grown into a successful salon chain serving Central Texas for the past 20 years. Premier Cuts, a locally-owned hair salon that started in San Marcos, is celebrating two decades of providing quality, affordable haircuts while building strong connections with the community.

Premier Cuts was founded by Brian Olson and Sabin Steinbacher as part of a college business plan assignment. What started as a concept on paper became a reality when he opened the first salon in San Marcos. Over the years, Premier Cuts has expanded into a trusted name, known for its excellent service and commitment to its employees.

Today, the salon has five locations across Central Texas, offering haircuts for women, men and children. As part of its commitment to affordability, Premier Cuts provides discounted rates—$18 women’s haircuts on Tuesdays and $16 men’s haircuts on Wednesdays.

One of the key factors behind Premier Cuts’ longevity is its dedicated team. Many stylists have been with the company for over a decade, including Velma, the salon manager in San Marcos and the first employee Olson hired.

“I think the most rewarding part of being able to stay open for the past 20 years is the longevity of employees that have stuck with me,” Olson said.

Office administrator Michelle Zimmerhanzel echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the strong company culture.

“We love to celebrate our employees,” Zimmerhanzel said. “Anytime we can celebrate and buy balloons and cupcakes for anybody, we're doing it. At every salon, everybody gets along. We just have a good time. We really are kind of a family, knowing each other for so long and sharing good things and bad things. It's just a really good culture that we have here.”

Premier Cuts’ commitment to convenience and accessibility led to a key partnership with H-E-B, where select salon locations operate inside the grocery stores. This collaboration allows customers to get haircuts while running errands, reinforcing Premier Cuts' mission of providing quality service with ease.

Beyond business, Olson has played an active role in giving back to the community. Before even opening Premier Cuts, he was involved in the Sights and Sounds of Christmas festival, later serving as its president. His efforts extended to preserving the San Marcos River and restoring the historic Cape Dam. Premier Cuts also supports local hair schools by providing educational sessions for aspiring stylists.

As Premier Cuts marks 20 years, Olson and his team remain focused on maintaining high standards, growing strategically, and continuing to serve their customers with the same dedication that started it all.

Individuals looking for an affordable, quality haircut in a welcoming environment can visit Premier Cuts at its location in Round Rock, Kyle, San Marcos, New Braunfels or San Antonio. Walk-in customers are welcome.
