Since opening in July 2022, Hear in Texas has experienced tremendous growth, reflecting a broader shift in public awareness about hearing health. In just under three years, the New Braunfels-based clinic has rapidly expanded its staff to meet a rising demand.

As the clinic continues to grow, its mission remains focused on both providing expert care for existing patients and promoting prevention strategies.

"It’s been incredible to watch how many people are becoming proactive about their hearing,” owner and audiologist Dr. Sally Miranda said. “This growth isn't just about adding staff; it's about reaching more people with the message that taking care of your hearing is essential for overall health."

The clinic has added two additional audiologists, Dr. Anna McCraney and Dr. Maggie Neyman, and is set to welcome a new hearing instrument specialist in March, along with a fourth-year audiology student from East Carolina University for an internship in May. The clinic has taken a thoughtful, personal approach to its expansion.

“It’s important that every new staff member fits our family-like culture,” Dr. Miranda said. “We hire people who share our values and focus on putting patients first.”

The hiring process is rigorous, with a strict interview protocol in place. Each potential team member must meet with the entire staff, and the team must collectively agree that the individual would be a good fit and contribute to the clinic’s continued growth.

This emphasis on a supportive, family-oriented work environment ensures that Hear in Texas maintains its reputation as a trusted provider of hearing health, while fostering an atmosphere that encourages collaboration and mutual respect.

Promoting hearing health through education

As Hear in Texas grows, so does its commitment to hearing health education. While the clinic provides expert care for those already experiencing hearing loss, it is equally dedicated to educating the community on how to protect their hearing and make informed decisions about their auditory health before problems arise.

Dr. Miranda explained that many of the causes of hearing loss are preventable, especially those related to noise exposure.

“Noise exposure is one of the biggest factors in hearing loss, and it’s often avoidable,” Dr. Miranda said. “If you're in a situation where you have to shout to be heard, that's a sign the noise level is damaging. The more time you spend in loud environments, the more harm it can do to your ears.”

Dr. Miranda encourages people to protect their hearing by wearing earplugs or earmuffs in noisy environments, such as concerts, construction sites or when using power tools. Custom hearing protection is also available for those who need a more tailored solution.

But hearing loss isn't just about noise—other factors, such as illness, medication and even simple earwax buildup, can also contribute to hearing damage.

Head colds, flu and other illnesses such as COVID-19 have also been linked to hearing loss and tinnitus, making it essential for individuals to monitor their hearing, especially after an illness.

The importance of early hearing screenings and baselines

As Hear in Texas expands, it’s also able to play a bigger role in spreading awareness about hearing loss prevention. Dr. Miranda explained the importance of baseline hearing tests, which can help detect early signs of hearing loss before it becomes more severe.

“It’s so important to get your first hearing test in your 20s. That way, you have a baseline, and if there are changes in the future, we can catch them early,” Dr. Miranda said.

She also points out the connection between hearing loss and cognitive decline, highlighting the importance of addressing hearing issues early.

“Studies show that 40% of dementia and Alzheimer's cases could have been prevented or delayed if hearing loss was treated sooner,” Dr. Miranda said. "The earlier you take care of your hearing, the better your chances are of preserving your cognitive function as you age.”
